The flag you see above belongs to the "The Independent State of Samoa," also known as Western Samoa. What most people don't know is that in present day Oceania, there are actually two Samoan territories. This independent state differs from American Samoa, which lies directly southeast of Western Samoa, shown in the corner of the map. It is an unincorporated territory of the United States, but both are part of the Samoan Island chain, differing mainly in land and not so much in the dominant practices of the Samoan culture. The following pages of this Wikispace provide insight into these cultural practices concerning both Western and American Samoa. The most important aspects of which concern environment, language, adaptation, politics, family, religion, contemporary issues, and the colonialism that was responsible for the division of Samoan territories.
